The International Olympic Council (IOC) and the Global International Sports Commission (GAISF) have established the Esports Liaison Group (Esports Media Consortium) to “continue communication and interaction” between members of the esports industry and organize the Olympics. Olympic Esports may become a reality in the not too distant future.
Following the Olympic Esports Summit event in Lausanne, Switzerland on July 21, the IOC said the team will stay in touch with various esports teams, tournament organizers and stakeholders to discuss potential partnerships.
Numerous representatives from the esports and gaming industries were present in Lausanne, along with members of the IOC and GAISF. While Olympic Paris plans to add esports to the 2024 Olympics, this is not the focus of the gathering. Instead, this meeting was used to familiarize the Olympic side with the esports industry.
“The Esports Forum is a unique opportunity to hear from many sides, including top gaming players,” IOC sporting director Kit McConnell told the IOC on July 21. “There is consensus. agreed that the partnership would ensure that the activities both support and promote the values of the Olympics; and the initial goal was not to develop to add esports to the Olympic program, we had a clear plan to continue the discussion in the near future.”
The establishment of an esports council within the Olympic organization was one of the big steps forward from the get-together, and helped the esports industry take another step toward world recognition.
The first meeting of the Olympic Esports Liaison Group will be at the Olympism at Action Forum in Beunos Aires from 5 to 6 October.
