Hearthstone’s Rise of Shadows expansion kicks off the game’s new Standard era. After a period of stability, players can now feel which cards are ‘a bit too strong’ in this rotation.

Not surprisingly, one of the most requested cards for nerfs is Dr. Boom, Mad Genius. One of the strongest decks right now is Control Warrior and specifically the incredibly high amount of armor that Dr. Boom gives the hero. When talking about his journey to the HCT World Championship, Brian “Bloodyface” Eason felt that Dr. Boom is one of the strongest cards right now.

Before the Frozen Throne expansion rotated, Dr. Boom has more powerful Death Knight cards that can compete with this hero card. Another HCT World Championship player David “Justsaiyan” Shan also feels that Dr. Boom is a problem. In an interview with IGN, Justsaiyan felt that Dr. Boom, Mad Genius became a problem because Death Knight rotated. Justsaiyan also said that he doesn’t like to play Warrior duel because they take too long.

As Justsaiyan points out, Dr. Boom, Mad Genius has very little competition in Hero cards. Since strong cards like Frost Lich Jaina, Shadowreaper Anduin, and Malfurion the Pestilent are no longer in the Standard, Boom is one of the only Heroes you can play.

In addition, Dr. Boom also possesses powerful Hero Powers. While it constantly changes after each turn – giving it unexpected power – it can still add up to 7 armor each turn Hero Power plus armor spawns, making Dr. Boom is extremely valuable.

Another card that the pros mentioned with IGN is EVIL Miscreant. World Hearthstone Champion Casper “Hunterace” Notto believes that EVIL Miscreant is too strong because Rogue has so many strong cards right now. Hunterace also said the potential solution is to increase this card’s manacost to 4 instead of the current 3.

Player Raphael “Bunnyhoppor” Peltzer told IGN that the Rogue class is generally too strong. He believes part of that reason comes from the Rogue Legendary minion, Edwin VanCleef. The solution that Bunnyhoppor came up with was to send Edwin to the Hall of Fame. He also thinks it’s better to nerf the Rogue spell Preparation by only reducing the next spell by 2 mana instead of 3 mana, thus helping to balance the Rogue class.

Bunnyhoppor also mentions the Magic Carpet, and says it’s not a problem right now, but can become too powerful if the Rogue class is nerfed. Magic Carpet is a 3 mana, 1/6 Neutral minion card that improves the strength of Zoo decks. It helps 1-mana minions add Rush and add 1 attack.

The deck that uses the most Magic Carpet today is Zoo Warlock. Magic Carpet combined with Hero Power continuously draws cards to make this deck easy to control the table with 1-mana minions. When cleared, Zoo Warlock also recovers better than other aggro decks because it can draw cards faster.

We still don’t know what adjustments Blizzard plans to make in the next balance, but above are the players’ thoughts.
