MapleStory 2 shuts down its global server after nearly two years of launch

MapleStory 2’s global server will be shutting down on May 27, according to an announcement from the game’s website.

MapleStory 2’s global server launched in October 2018, meaning the game was closed for less than two years. The MMO game takes players to a world that allows you to fight mushrooms, and decorate your home. The game also has a battle royale mode.

“We are forever grateful for our players’ patience and dedication to MapleStory 2, as the team attempted to remake the game from Project New Leaft. But in the end, we decided we couldn’t deliver a service that lived up to everyone’s expectations,” the developer said in the announcement. “We had to look at the current state of the game and its path into the future, and came to the conclusion that it would be difficult to ensure the long-term development of the game while making sure MapleStory 2 remains your MapleStory 2.”

From now on, players will not be able to purchase in-game currency, and those who purchased between December 11 and now will receive a refund. Refunds will be paid in NX, the currency used by all Nexon games.

The game has a fairly short storyline and players can reach the maximum level quickly. That left them quite frustrated. While it doesn’t have the pay-to-way elements of its predecessor, MapleStory, late game stats and gear are too RNG-dependent.

According to the Japanese website MapleStory 2, the Japanese server will close on the same day as the global server. The game will continue to run in Korea and China.
