Dota 2: What hero should new and old players pick when they’re in the same lane

Dota 2: What hero should new and old players pick when they're in the same lane

For the past several weeks, we’ve been showing off new Dota-friendly heroes that haven’t gotten much attention. Today, the article will expand on this topic: talk about hero pairs for players and friends to try. The goal of this article is to find effective dual lane heroes in lane and during the game. Of course, they are still fun to play and require you to know how to coordinate with each other.

Of course, Dota 2 has countless duos, so the article will only outline a few basic ideas and reasons to choose them. Hopefully the community will share more hero combos that everyone believes can be highly effective.

WRAITH KING NEWS + OLD PEOPLE KEEPER OF THE LIGHT

Keeper of the Light is hard to play. This hero is bloody, has a bit of a greedy playstyle and does not contribute much to the team in team fight until he reaches the green stick.

However, this hero pairing is very effective when going together, as KotL solves many of the problems Wraith King has. Do you want to spam Wraithfire Blast in lane and get kills continuously? KotL can make that happen. Wraith King’s stun and slow enough for KotL to set up the Illuminate. Farming faster is also another option, as Charkra Magic reduces the cooldown of Vampiritc Spirit, which means WK summons more skeletons, which means more gold for the carry. New players keep farming in the jungle when the team needs to fight? Use Recall to remind carry back to fight!

No mana to util? Already have KotL! Additionally, Charkra Magic also reduces Mortal Strike’s cooldown. Crit 260% twice in a row is very strong. However, it requires you to practice a little to ensure regular implementation. And that’s why it’s a good duo: it’s fun, it’s effective, and it requires two people to work well together.

NEW LEGION COMMANDER + SKYWRATH MAGE OLD

Among the three offlanes for new Dota players to choose from, I think Legion Commander is the easiest hero to combo effectively. LC has higher movement speed and damage compared to Ax, as well as Tide Hunter. Although there is no AoE control ability, Legion Commander makes up for it with an extended duration. Also, LC is stronger, especially in long low rank games.

The laning phase is nothing special. Even though Skywrath and LC have movement speed above 325, the two heroes don’t have any obvious combos in the laning phase. It wasn’t until mid-game that the duo destroyed and that’s one of the reasons they’re so stable in the pro scene.

Mystic Flare and Duel have pretty similar cooldowns. Most of the time, as long as the LC reaches the enemy, she will definitely win the Duel when Mystic Flare is comboed with. This means the LC earns more damage, more money and more freedom to play. This combo works even when the team is in the lead – this is a very remarkable point.

In addition to the exciting gameplay, this combo also teaches you a lot of things. Since the LC relies on active items, this is a good opportunity for new Dota players to learn how to use Blink, Blade Mail, and BKB. The LC also has a strong Dispel, which helps to understand more about status effects, status effect resistance as well as strong/light dispel. Finally, by teaching our newcomer Legion Commander as well as how to lane, we made sure an LC jungler was wiped out of the game. Let’s hope so.

NEW PLAYER OGRE MAGI + OLD PLAYER JUGGERNAUT

Among the two friendly support heroes for new players, I think Ogre Magi is more suitable when playing with friends. Warlock is a fun hero to play, but not necessarily optimal in most games. Therefore, Ogre Magi + Juggernaut, or more broadly, Ogre Magi + any dynamic carry with ganking potential would be a better choice.

Heroes like Troll Warlock, Chaos Knight and Wraith King are all suitable, but there are many reasons why we chose Juggernaut in this article.

First, in theory, Juggernaut has the highest kill potential of the three heroes when paired with Ogre Magi and Ignite. Slow + Bladefury is a very old combo, but still very well used. Level 3 of this combo deals massive magic damage.

The second is the Healing Ward. The potential you get from level 1 of this move for Ogre (hero has 7 armor initially) is huge. That helps Ogre Magi to survive for a long time against enemy attacks and get to play Dota more. As long as you have mana left, Healing Ward will help everyone in the lane play proactively and stay longer. This is also the time for new players to learn the meaning of Armor and its working mechanism.

In the end, Bloodlust was too good for Juggernaut. Lower BAT means stronger attack speed effects on Juggernaut. If you need to understand more why Juggernaut works so well from Bloodlust, you can read through the guide to playing Juggernaut and Phantom Assassin effectively.

The basics in Dota are never boring. Although they do not really make you stronger, the article believes that it can speed up the process of learning to play Dota. The author also believes that equipping new Dota players with knowledge is better than teaching them to build items/skills one by one. You will be surprised to know that players with good game knowledge will bring unexpected effects.

Above are some general ideas about effective dual lanes for new players + old players. But as mentioned at the beginning of the article, Dota 2 has many potential combos that have not been listed. Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
