CSGO: If you’re in France, you’ll know what’s in the loot box before you open it

The recent update of CSGO adds new items in the player’s inventory in France. Named “X-ray Scanner”, it allows players to look inside a loot box to see what they will receive before opening it. This change is used to deal with the risk of being regulated by the government over the loot box issue in France.

In France only, X-Ray Scanner now allows any player to preview the content contained in a loot box before paying to open it. It sounds convenient, but if you don’t want the item, the player is still forced to spend money to open the chest, before being shown the next loot box.

Of course, this update also has disadvantages. Players in France can’t buy loot boxes from other Steam Community Market members, but they can still sell them. The change is to prevent players from trying to exploit the X-Ray Scanner’s vulnerability.

Valve’s flagship FPS shooter has been controversial for years. The skin in the game is gradually being abused for betting, and then accused of fraud. Valve has tried to make adjustments to tighten skin management issues – but loot boxes have now extended to the entire gaming industry. Loot boxes once caused great controversy in the game Star War Battlefront 2, and then were required by lawmakers around the world to control.

However, loot boxes continue to be present in every AAA multiplayer game. Everything depends on how consumers perceive and evaluate how game developers and publishers apply them.
