Many Esports titles have game directors and designers as the face of the development team such as Overwatch with Jeff Kaplan, Valorant with Anna Donion, PlayerUnknonw’s Battlegrounds with PlayerUnknown. Dota 2 has IceFrog, but he is not like the names mentioned above.

While Kaplan and Donion are constantly in front of the camera to discuss the current state of the game and give reasons for the meta-changing patches, IceFrog is more secretive. Many people think that IceFrog is the father of Defense of the Ancients, a mod in Warcraft 3 and considered a statue of the MOBA genre. That’s not necessarily true. The first Dota was created by Kyle “Eul” Sommer in 2003. Eul was later recognized for his role in Dota with the item Eul’s Scepter. He left the game after the release of the Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne expansion (an expansion that introduced many new troops and new tools to the Warcraft 3 map editor).

In 2004, Steve “Guinsoo” Feak replaced Eul and added many new features to the game, but left the game shortly after. In 2005, IceFrog took over the development of DotA and took over until 2009, when he was contacted by Valve to help create Dota 2. While the Guinsoo and Eul names were both known, IceFrog was not. are not.

Clues to his true identity began to surface in 2010 when an anonymous post regarding who IceFrog was was posted. The post said IceFrog’s name was Abdul Ismail and he was a very bad partner. The article also said that IceFrog has “passed” Valve and worked with the developers of League of Legends game Riot Games and S2 Games with the game Heroes of Newerth.

Valve constantly let the name Abdul Ismail appear in hidden software files and prominently in the credits of the famous documentary Dota 2 Free To Play.

This leads many to believe that Abdul Ismail is IceFrog’s real name, and this information was confirmed in 2017 in legal documents related to a lawsuit involving Valve. In it, who is IceFrog’s real name.
