An admin of the Chinese esports betting site, VPGame, has been accused of participating in match-fixing of several Southeast Asian Dota 2 teams in order for them to ‘throw the game’, according to a report from AFK Gaming, the forum and esports news based in India.
One of the teams presented evidence of this illegal act, AFK Gaming said. The evidence includes conversations between the team manager and the admin – with the nickname: “VPGame.Juntao.”
Admin seems to have contacted someone in Southeast Asia, called Oyster Lee. This person is responsible for producing a list of tier-2 teams in SEA that are participating in minor tournaments outside of Dota 2 Pro Circuit, such as JoinDOTA League and ProDotA Cup.
This person then contacts the teams in the tier 2 tournament through their social channels, connecting them with the VPGame admin via Skype.
Based on the evidence, the admin added the team’s manager to Skype, and immediately offered an invitation to the live tournament sponsored by VPGame, otherwise, the teams had to fix the match. In it, the admin said that the teams should lose a few matches, or let the opponent get 10 kills (the team that takes 10 lives first wins) – clearly referring to the bets available on betting websites.
At the end of the discussion, the admin told the management to “forget what I said” if not interested in the offer. The manager quickly refused, and the screenshots show nothing more of the conversation between the two. To confirm the authenticity of this evidence, the representative of AFK Gaming pretended to be a party who wanted to participate in match settlement and contacted the admin on Skype. This admin introduced them to another person, with the nickname “orenji.”
While this person did not directly mention match-fixing, they used an email address with the domain VP Game – asking AFK Gaming to send them an “offer.” This leads AFK Gaming to believe that both Juntao and orenji are related to VP Game.
At the time of writing, VPGame has not yet released an official dispatch about the news that AFK has released.
