Kazuhisa Hashimota, the creator of the famous Konami code – up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A – has passed away. Konami announced Hashimoto’s passing on Twitter.
Hashimota created the Konami code in 1985, to aid in game testing during Gradius’ development for four-button electronics (NES). “I didn’t play much so I couldn’t win the game, so I installed the Konami code,” he said in a 2003 interview. “Because I’m the one using it, I wanted to make sure it was easy to remember. ”
For some reason, the code was left behind when the game was released, and when its presence was discovered, Konami decided to leave it as is. Since then, the code has become a phenomenon in the gaming world: it’s been used in dozens of later games, including many PC games like Fortnite and BioShock Infinite, it’s embedded in the GOG website, and in 2017, Bank of Canada. secretly added Konami’s code in the announcement of the new $10 bill.
The cause of Hashimoto’s death has not yet been shared. He lived to be 61 years old.
