Nvidia believes that gaming laptops will be the main rival of next-generation consoles

With PS5 and Xbox Series X on the way, Nvidia says the laptop will be “the world’s largest gaming console.”

The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will primarily use AMD hardware, and have extremely strong potential when they go on sale later in 2020. Desktop gaming PCs have always been the competition, but Nvidia believes the biggest challenger of the new consoles will be gaming laptops. In a press conference with shareholders, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that the gaming laptop segment is basically “a new game console” in the most popular and true sense.

Jensen’s comment relates to a question posed about revenue predictions for gaming laptops this year.

“Our notebook business.. has grown by double digits for eight consecutive quarters, and it’s definitely a new gaming segment,” he said. “Like the new game console. This will be the biggest console game in the world. And the reason for that is that more people own laptops than any other device.”

“The fact that we were able to bring RTX into thin and light notebooks was a breakthrough,” continued Jensen. “And it’s one of the reasons we’re seeing such great success in notebooks.”

Nvidia’s Max-Q design has made this possible. Although the Max-Q GPUs are not as powerful as the desktop version, in return, it is thinner and lighter. For example, MSI’s G65 Stealth Thin is one of those gaming laptops that is only 17.5mm thick and weighs 1.8kg more. Similar to Acer’s Triton 500 – it is equipped with a Max-Q RTX 2080 GPU inside the laptop with a thickness of 17.8mm and a weight of 2kg.

So what do these numbers say? According to IDC, gaming laptops grew by nearly 13% in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the second quarter of the previous year. At press time, IDC predicts 19.4 million gaming laptops will be sold this year.

As noted from PCGamesN, 106 million PS4s have been sold in the past 6 years. That is an average of 18 million machines a year. In its first year, PS4 sold 13.7 million units.

From there, we can see that gaming laptops are a formidable opponent. However, the market will become unpredictable when the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch, as well as the impact Nvidia’s Ampere GPU will have. Overall, gaming laptops play a big role in the industry and they can be easily hooked up to TVs to compete with consoles.
