Valve’s CSGO just hit a new big milestone for the first time in its 8th year.
CSGO has long been the gold standard for first-person shooter esports. Although the game is available on many platforms, most of the players come from PC.
While Valve’s flagship FPS game retains the traditional competition system, the bridge between casual and competitive gameplay is the key to success.
Even though CSGO has been around for 7 years, the player base continues to grow – and at an incredibly fast rate. New content in Operation Shattered Web helped the game reach new heights in early 2020.
On January 26, CSGO surpassed the half million player mark for the first time in gaming history, after reaching 504,128 average players over a 30-day period. Data extracted from Steam Charts.
After a period of loss of attraction at the beginning of 2019, Vavle’s CSGO gradually returned.
With a series of major tournaments taking place, with Operation Shatter Web launching in late November, players began to get hooked and continuously broke the previous average player records.
A big part of the success comes from the competitive gameplay of CSGO, with the ELO system as the key. ELO is a method of calculating players’ skills based on their environment, to balance the opponents they will meet.
Simply put, it allows players to easily switch between recreational and competitive play. That means it’s much more engaging, leading to more people wanting to participate.
In addition, Valve’s decision to change to a free-to-play model in December 2018 also partly helped increase the number.
The peak viewership record of 850,485 has not been broken since April 2016. However, with Valve’s new schedule for this 2020 season, perhaps breaking this record will only be a matter of time. .
