Valve has launched a new feature on Steam that allows remote PC users to play local multiplayer games together. Called Remote Play Together, the feature is currently in beta testing.
Remote Play Together, shared with game developers weeks ago on the Steamworks website. It allows Steam friends to play games together, games that are usually restricted to local or multiplayer splistcreen (split-screen). Valve says the system supports up to four people, “or more under ideal conditions,” and people can communicate with each other via voice chat. To ensure there are no unfortunate surprises, only the game is shared with other players, not the desktop,” or “other secrets,” Valve said. “You can share – or limit access – the keyboard and mouse. The choice is yours.”
Remote Play Together was brought up by Steam to compete with other game sellers. Whether it works or not, we’ll have to wait and see, but it opens up a lot of potential for playing local multiplayer games on Steam while not in the same room.
To use Remote Play Together, you need to sign up for the Steam client beta. To do that, go to Steam settings and go to “Beta participation” under the Account menu. Press the “Change” button and select Steam Beta Upgrade, select OK and exit the menu. When it’s done, Steam will download the update and reboot, and that’s it. Note, because this is a beta version, there will be some problems during use.
Valve says it will improve “network stability and cross-hardware compatibility” during the Remote Play Together beta. Comments can be found on the Steam Remote Play forum.
