Stardew Valley can be played alone or you can share farm life with friends thanks to the game’s multiplayer mode. You can now play Stardew Valley co-op on Steam or GOG.

You do not need any mods to play Stardew Valley 4 players, but besides that, the game still has some mods to make the game more interesting.

Running a Stardew Valley multiplayer game is super simple – you just have to select it in the menu bar. In fact, players don’t need a tutorial to get used to the game, but the following tips will definitely make it easier for you to share your farm with friends.

Along with these tips, the article also shares the best multiplayer mods of the game, allowing you to play with dozens of other players, instead of just 4. Or you can also turn your farm into a private server.

Stardew Valley multiplayer: Create a new farm

Stardew Valley’s 4-player co-op is just like single-player, only you have more friends to help you out. One person is the host, and up to 3 other people can join. So the game is not really co-op, just one person owns the farm. But, you will soon have more fields, and the money is divided equally among all.

To get started, enter the new co-op menu from the external menu screen. From there, you can:

  • Host a new co-op game
  • Re-host an existing co-op game
  • Join a new farm (provided: one of your friends has hosted and has an empty cabin for himself)
  • Rejoin a farm (provided the host is in the game)
  • Join a LAN game (by entering the host’s IP address)
  • Enter the room invite code (generated by the host) (this allows Steam/GOG players to play together)

Stardew Valley’s multiplayer doesn’t support split-screen co-op, so if you’re planning on playing with someone, make sure they have a copy of the game too and pick up the beta through Steam and their GOG. Co-op depends on the new building named cabin. You must have cabins on your farm for each friend you plan to invite, up to 3 cabins. Fortunately, each cabin is quite cheap, just 100 gold and 10 stone. You can start a new farm with your own pre-built cabins, or run the save game available in the single-player game and craft a cabin from Robin the carpenter before opening the save in co-op.

Now you’ve got yourself a farm and at least a cabin for your friends to live in. Start the game via the co-op button on the main screen and scroll down near the bottom of the Stardew menu. You can invite friends over LAN, or send an invite code to your friends to enter, or invite on Steam by right-clicking their name in the friends list, then selecting “Invite to game.”

You can play with friends on Steam or GOG with an invite code. Saves are stored on the host’s computer, meaning other players cannot play after the host exits the game, but the host can choose to play alone without previous old friends.

Stardew Valley multiplayer: Tips for farming together

The most important thing in Stardew co-op you need to remember is to know what you can share and are not What to share with friends.

These are completely separate things:

  • Skill level
  • Item Box
  • Relationships

Things you can share:

  • Farm space
  • Gold
  • Most importantly, time

Obviously, the clock in multiplayer games will always continue whether you’re sorting your inventory or browsing the store. Therefore, if you are a person who often sits around groping for the inventory for a long time in single-player, don’t bring that habit to multiplayer. In co-op, the clock doesn’t stop and each day goes by very quickly.

The sun always sets before you finish the task you intended to complete (in single player). Without the people you play with and don’t communicate, everything can’t be done. The pressure to act fast is not a fault in co-op design. It creates a new way of playing and requires you to adjust to adapt. If forced to pause the game, the host can press the default button T to open the chat menu and type “/pause” to pause the game.

There will be times when a player exits the game while their inventory holds what you need. You can get what they are by checking out their cabin lockers. If you invite a new friend to an existing save, they will have to create a new character and start with basic tools, no skill levels at all.

In addition to the time limit, the game has some other points to note. In co-op mode, you cannot move or destroy buildings on your farm from the Robin shop. This mechanism is created to avoid other players being in the building you intend to destroy or standing in the position you intend to move. One way to do this is to kick other players out of the game so you can rearrange the farm in single player mode, but it’s a bit annoying.

Once you get used to the shared farm life, the game has several mods to make the multiplayer mode fresh and not boring.

Stardew Valley multiplayer mods

Always On Server For Multiplayer – This mod allows the remaining players on the farm to continue playing even if the host is not present, and the mod is smart enough to pause the game when no one is active, so that time doesn’t pass. The host will have to let the game run on his computer, but in return, your farm will work non-stop.

Unlimited players – This mod removes the limit of 4 people and 4 cabins, allowing both a community live in Stardew together. However, things can get complicated when dozens of players are playing at the same time. Modder funny-snek, the creator of the Always on Server mod above, showed off the picture below on reddit showing a farm running with both mods. Looks really nice and eye catching.
