Riot Games won the Sports Emmy Award thanks to the thousand-year-old Dragon

Riot Games has just received a new award. At the Sports Emmy Awards 2018 event, League of Legends won the Oustanding Live Graphics Design award.

Riot Games took home this award for its excellent performance in the 2017 World Finals. The final took place at Beijing National Stadium, also known as the ‘bird’s nest’ field. If you missed the opening ceremony of the final, you can relive that moment in the video below. You will see thousand-year-old dragons flying around the stadium. It looks like a Hollywood movie, only it happens in real life.

In this journey, Riot Games beat out four other major TV channels. They beat TBS’ 2017 ELEAGUE, TNT’s 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend, the 2017 NBA Finals on ABC and the school basketball tournament on ESPN/ESPN2. This is not the first time esports has appeared at the event. ELEAGUE has also made two appearances in previous years, being nominated for Studio Design and Art Direction (art direction).

The fact that esports is recognized, side by side with traditional sports is a big step towards connecting esports with everyone. More specifically, esports beat the production team from the famous American professional basketball, including the NBA Finals and NBA All-Star Weekend. Hopefully this is just the first step for many more awards at the next Sports Emmy Awards.
