Game director Jeff Kaplan said Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2 will eventually merge into one. In a recent interview with Kotaku, Kaplan confirmed that while Overwatch 2 is currently a separate game, they will one day run in the same client for “competitive” reasons.

Overwatch 2 is one of many announcements at BlizzCon that fans have been eagerly awaiting. The game will introduce some new heroes, maps, and Push mode. In the interview, Kaplan said Overwatch 2 was “100% of the reason” for the Overwatch update delay.

Some fans have noticed that some events during the season remain unchanged. Junkenstein’s Revenge, while one of the best Halloween events, is no different from last year. New maps as well as new heroes, specifically Sigma, came out almost 4 months ago.

Overwatch 2 is a welcome update to the game, but questions are starting to arise due to it being a separate game. Other games in the Blizzard family get major updates but never separate. So how will Overwatch development change? The answer is not much has changed.

“There will come a time when the two games will merge,” Kaplan said. I think this is important, especially in the competition. The idea is to avoid dividing the player base and giving them a competitive advantage. If you apply the same arena, then you won’t get a better framerate because playing on a different engine version.” So, while Overwatch 1 and 2 are two different games, according to this description, it looks like they will become one in the future.

In Overwatch 2, Kaplan said, the team really wanted the Overwatch development process to “really define what a ‘sequel’ is.” Maybe the game will make players pay for some big content before lumping them into 1.
