The Wall Street Journal reports that a new version of the Nintendo Switch hardware will be available next year, “following first-hand information about Nintendo’s plans given by vendors.”
There are a few details about the new hardware configuration that will be improved over the current version.
“The current Switch version uses a non-premium LCD screen, missing the technologies that are considered basic standards in LCD screens on new smartphones,” the Wall Street Journal reported. “Upgrading screens with these technologies will result in brighter displays, thinner screens, and more energy savings. The new Switch version may not use the self-illuminating diode or the OLED screen used in Apple’s iPhone X series.”
Nintendo sold nearly 20 million units worldwide between its 2017 launch and June 30 of this year, and this revamp could attract new players. This new hardware is expected to launch in the second half of 2019 so that the current version will be sold more during the next big holiday season.
Nintendo executives previously said that the company not only wants every family to own a Nintendo Switch, but they also want every member of the family to have one of their own.
“The biggest attraction of the Nintendo Switch is that it’s portable and easy to use against each other over a wireless LAN connection.” Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said in its previous financial report for 2018. “If everyone has a Nintendo Switch, then we can create new Nintendo genres, and the Nintendo Switch can. classified as a separate device category, separate from smart devices as well as other game console systems. Expanding the Nintendo Switch world in this way is one way to eliminate risk.”
Launching a more advanced Switch version could be an effective way to sell families a second device without having to trade in or sell their first Switch.
