Microsoft’s Next Generation Console Name Will Just Be Xbox

Microsoft's Next Generation Console Name Will Just Be Xbox

The next generation Xbox has been announced, with the name Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series X is the 4th generation of Xbox from Microsoft, following the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

The names are very distinct, especially when you compare them to Sony’s simple naming system. PlayStation started with PlayStation 1 in 1995, and is about to launch PlayStation 5 in 2020.

But there’s something pretty interesting about the way Microsoft announced the Series X:

Did you notice?

“THE NEW” is quite small, followed by a large “XBOX”, and below that is “SERIES X” in mid-sized font.

After a closer look, it looks like the “Series X” is the version. And from now on, Xbox consoles will be referred to simply as “Xbox”.

“The name we will use for the next generation is simply Xbox. And at The Game Awards, you got to see that name through Xbox Series X.”

Like the original Xbox, the next generation is simply “Xbox”.

It’s simply a rebranding, but this will simplify the Xbox line even more. This also confirms Microsoft’s direction with the Xbox console.

“Similar to what fans saw in previous generations, the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows for many new consoles in the future,” said a Microsoft representative.

Currently, there are two versions of Xbox One: Xbox One X and Xbox One S. Both came out after the original Xbox One, which was released in November 2013.

Years later, Microsoft also sold the first Xbox One, but with a completely different appearance from the two console versions above. All three consoles belong to the “Xbox One” generation, from 2013 to the present time. They both play Xbox One games, but the Xbox One X is technically more powerful than the two above.

Are you starting to get confused?

That’s why Microsoft is simplifying the name Xbox from now on. At the same time, this announcement shows that Microsoft is working on different versions of the next-generation Xbox – rumored to be a disc-less, stream-focused Xbox. Microsoft has yet to say anything about this rumor. “We’re excited to give fans a glimpse of the next-gen gaming with Xbox Series X,” the rep said. “But beyond that we have nothing more to share.”

But one thing is pretty clear: “Series X” doesn’t matter anymore – it’s just Xbox now.
