Although the word Leviathan appears a lot in Western literature, it actually comes from the Hebrew Bible, which originated in a completely different culture than in Northern Europe. In the Hebrew Bible, Leviathan is a giant sea monster of uncontrollable strength with a shell as thick as steel and breath ready to boil an ocean. However, when looking at Norse Mythology, the name Leviathan is another symbol for Jörmungandr – the giant sea monster that appeared from the first trailers of God of War.

The transition in these cultures is the “nod” to the original script that developer David Jaffe intended with God of War 3. For fans of War God, he is famous as the project director of God of War 1 and 2, played an important role in bringing Kratos to the heights of glory it is today. However, before God of War 3 could take shape, he decided to leave the roof of Sony Santa Monica to find his own journey in the game world.

In David Jaffe’s original script, he wanted Kratos to kill Zeus in the first place and create a giant vortex that sucked all the mythical world into one. From Greece to Egypt, from Northern Europe to Christianity.. it all blends into a single whole. There Kratos will use his power to force humanity to abandon faith in the gods, completely eradicating the dominance of the arrogant forces on high. But as we all know, that scenario did not exist in God of War 3 and pushed our God of War to wander to the frozen Nordic region.

In this land, Kratos abandoned the Blades of Chaos which represented the bloody journey he had traveled through and was given a battle ax by two dwarves, Sindri and Brok, named Leviathan. Leviathan’s body is carved with magic runes with the power of cold air to help Kratos perform amazing moves, which became his effective companion throughout the length of God of War. Cast by Sindri and Brok himself, Leviathan can be considered as a god with the same “blood” as Mjonir – the famous hammer of the Thunder God Thor. That is why it brings the ability to return to its owner whenever it is summoned..

Not only that, the Leviathan’s handle can also be replaced with different materials and attributes, allowing Kratos to push the power of this battle ax to the extreme. Of course, its power will still only focus on welding, which is shown by its ability to freeze as soon as it hits the target.. However, in the arduous journey where its enemies all bring forth From the frozen land, Kratos will of course have to rely on another divine soldier… an old friend of the past.
