This question has been on the Dota 2 community’s mind for a while: Will The International 2020 or TI10 go ahead as scheduled? And if so, how will attendance be determined?
Most recently, Valve released an announcement confirming what everyone feared: TI10 will be postponed. However, we also have a bit of good news that the Battle Pass will go ahead as scheduled, and will launch closer to the original scheduled time. Here is the official announcement from Valve:
“After careful consideration of the global health situation caused by Covid-19, we had to make the difficult decision to delay The International. The team has looked for many possible timelines, but it is likely that the tournament will take place in 2021. Due to the limitations of mass gatherings, the danger of the virus, and global movement restrictions, we are not confident to Announce the exact time in the near future. Currently, the team is restructuring the DPC season for the fall, and will release more information as soon as it is available.
The prize money for TI10 will be contributed from 25% of the sales of the next Battle Pass, which we plan to launch soon instead of waiting until near the time of the tournament. However, because the team works from home and everything takes longer to complete, the Battle Pass launch will be delayed by at least a few weeks than usual.
We hope everyone in the Dota community is living as safely as possible, and the team looks forward to the time when we can once again welcome The Internional.”
Since the Battle Pass usually launches in the first two weeks of May, a couple of weeks of delay means this year’s Battle Pass will be available in late May or early June. Also, we’ll have to wait and see this fall DPC season and how will the TI10 qualifier go.
This is certainly not the best news, but it is the right decision when we consider the current conditions. It’s hard to know how things will turn out in August, but it’s better to announce it early than delay it to the last minute.
