T1 has won the right to attend the ONE Esports Singapore Major and they want to make good use of this opportunity even though it means a big trade-off for the team.

T1 has announced kick carry Souliya “JaCkky” Khoomphetsavong from the official lineup. Less than 24 hours later, the team confirmed the acquisition of Nuengnara “23savage” Teeramahanon on its Twitter account.

The T1 lineup of the ONE Esports Singapore Major is as follows:

  1. Nuengnara “23savage” Teeramahanon
  2. Karl “Karl” Jayme
  3. Carlo “Kuku” Palad
  4. Kenny “Xepher” Deo
  5. Matthew “Whitemon” Filemon

Owning 23savage’s signature is considered a plus point for T1. 23savage enjoyed a successful 2020 with Fnatic, but suddenly left the team to join Vici Gaming at the end of the summer.

23savage ended up not playing for Vici Gaming due to a visa problem that prevented him from traveling to China, while stand-in for VG, Yang “Erica” Shaohan, performed very well. 23savage left the team in January and stood-in for BOOM Esports as well as HOYO in the DPC Southeast Asia qualifiers.

With this change, T1 will be penalized for DPC points earned during the ONE Esports Singapore Major, as well as scores earned from 3rd place in the winter season. T1 believes that 23savage is completely worth fighting for the number of points lost.

The 23savage issue shows that the new Dota 2 rules are still flawed

T1’s 23savage acquisition is a familiar situation for Dota 2 fans. In the past many times, teams that won the right to major or major tournaments decided to cut 1 member to increase strength.

The best examples are Khoo “Ohaiyo” Chong Xin being kicked from Fnatic in 2018 and Nico “Gunnar” Lopez being kicked from Team Team in 2019. Quite rarely, in both cases, Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao play a key role. While EternaLEnVy was condemned on both issues, there were similar situations unfolding from many other teams.

It is difficult for the community to condemn T1 for this decision because this is a reality in sports in general, but this exposes a flaw in the DPC system. T1 used a different lineup for the ONE Esports Singapore Major compared to the previous Dota Pro Ciruit qualifier. This exposes the obvious weakness of the tournament as a whole.
