Dota 2: Rupture, Demonic Purge and Taunt, secrets not everyone knows

In this article, we’ll focus on Bloodseeker’s ultimate – Rupture, Shadowdemon’s ultimate – Demonic Purge and how Taunt interacts with certain skills. Taunt here refers to Duel (Legion Commander), Berserker’s Call (Axe) and Winter’s Curse (Winter Wyvern). These spells cause the hero to be forced to attack a certain object.

1) Rupture damage can be avoided with Queen of Pain’s blink (or anything that takes you beyond 1300 units distance for 0.25 seconds).

Rupture’s damage is limited to 1300 units for 0.25 seconds. If the hero hit by Rupture can move more than 1300 units in 0.25 seconds, the hero will not take damage. Queen of Pain’s maximum Blink is 1300, which is the maximum range for Rupture to work. If the QoP just blinks and stands still, the hero will lose health. But if she moves only a few units at max blink, the range will exceed 1300 and all damage from Rupture will be nullified! This applies to all Teleportation, including Nature’s Prophet. If the NP uses this move to move less than 1300 range while hit by Rupture, Nature’s Prophet will lose health.

Vengeful Spirit’s Nether Swap is quite interesting. Swap max is 1200 units, which means it will deal damage. But with the Aether Lens, the dark range has been increased to 1400, ensuring no blood loss when Swap objects with Rupture. This is a good way to save your core against Bloodseeker.

2) Demonic Purge continuously purges “positive buffs”, but some buffs remain

This new change makes Demonic Purge a very cool move. It’s basically a move that can’t be dispel, and continuously dispels all “positive buffs” (buffs that help the hero) on the affected target for a while. So, if Eul’s Scepter of Dinivinity is used to protect himself from Demonic Purge, that hero won’t stay in the air for 2.5 seconds, since Demonic Purge will purge it. However, even though Scepter’s ‘Cyclone’ is stopped, the basic dispel still applies. For example, if the hero is affected by Demonic Purge and Soul Catcher, using Scepter will have the base dispel and remove the Soul Catcher debuff, however, the hero will not stay in the air for 2.5 seconds.

The damage from Demonic Purge is Pure, so it will penetrate spell immunity. At the same time, so is its effect. Whether the target is in BKB or has a Repel on them, Demonic Purge will ensure that buffs like Guardian Angel and War Cry are removed as soon as they are cast.

3) Shadow Dance blocks Duel instantly, but Winter’s Curse doesn’t

Slark’s Scepter is the least upgraded of the game’s Scepters, but it has a few interesting points! Duel uses a ‘Taunt’ mechanism that forces both affected heroes to fight. And Slark’s AoE Shadow Dance can instantly stop the Duel and help teammates escape Taunt.

But not with Winter’s Curse. Heroes hit allies, so they still have vision despite being affected by Shadow Dance.

4) Slark steals stats from allies in Winter’s Curse, but Outworld Devourer can’t steal Intelligence

When Winter’s Curse is cast on Slark’s ally, Slark will gain additional stats through the essence shift stack, of course the ally will lose those stats. The plus point here is that when Winter’s Curse ends, Slark becomes stronger. However, the same can’t happen with Outworld Devourer’s Arcane Orb even though it’s autocast because it’s not passive so it doesn’t count.

5) Duel’s Taunt always takes precedence over Berserker’s Call’s Taunt

Heroes affected by Berserker’s Call will stop hitting Ax when Duel and will switch to Legion Commander. If two heroes are engaged in a Duel, Ax’s Call will have no effect. So don’t Blink and try to save your teammates from Duel!

6) Legion Commander still takes Duel damage while Duel an opponent that dies from Winter’s Curse

Legion Commander can’t deal damage to Winter Curse targets, but Duel still counts as a win! So this is a way to get extra Duel damage for free if there is no priority target.

7) Winter’s Curse will move with the target and Taunt allies in the last position

Winter’s Curse subjects do not always remain stationary. As the subject moves, Winter’s Curse moves too! So if Kunkka continues to use ‘X’ Marks the Spot to push lane, just put Winter’s Curse on Kunkka. When this hero returns to the original position, his teammates will kill him if he doesn’t anticipate it!

8) Debuffs can be cast on heroes with Winter’s Curse

While it’s not possible to damage heroes affected by Winter’s Curse, using something like Bloodthorn ensures that Curse’s allies will hit a critical strike! Corrosive Haze also reduces armor, similar to Desolator. The process of finishing heroes with Winter’s Curse will be faster.
