The server was down last Friday in compliance with the “Digital Millennium Copyright Act” from the Company Walt Disney. This follows an investigation by BBC shows that online social media users – the majority of whom are children and adolescents – are exposed to a large amount of information related to sexuality and racism. A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child abuse images.

Disney told the BBC: “Child safety is Walt Disney’s top priority and we are appalled by allegations of disgusting behavior and conduct by certain individuals on the site that are illegally using license the Club Penguin trademark for its own purposes. We will continue to take action against such unauthorized practices.”

Disney Club Penguin – one of the first social networks specifically aimed at children, launched in 2005 and has reached more than 200 million users. The original version of this website has content filtering tools and moderators to remove inappropriate messages.

However, after shutting down in 2017, unofficial copies of the site began to spring up – and many of those sites had content filters disabled. The BBC found that moderators had failed to remove racist content and that Club Penguin players were receiving a series of “abusive” messages.

Club Penguin Online previously accumulated more than 8 million users over the course of two years, becoming one of the game’s largest unofficial servers after the original game went down. Recently, the number of users of the server has spiked to one million during the time of social isolation due to the COVID-19 virus.

In a deleted blog post, Club Penguin Online confirmed the server will no longer be available after May 2020 due to copyright claims. According to the complaint, the website above is an unauthorized version of the Club Penguin game and contains content Copyright infringement.
