CSGO: Instructions to increase FPS by setting Windows registry

CSGO sometimes does not run stably on Microsoft’s operating system, here are three Windows settings that you should consider applying.

Windows 10 has some pretty cool software, but CSGO’s aging engine is sometimes adversely affected by features like Game Bar, Game DVR and Windows Update as well as some other settings. To help you get the most out of CSGO, here are a few settings that increase FPS as well as expand CSGO throughput.

Note, the first tip requires adjusting the Windows registry. It’s best to back up your registry before making any changes.

Accelerate CSGO and FPS

The first change you want to adjust is directly related to the Windows Game Bar and DVR features. While the software can be useful for recording gameplay, it’s really not worth turning on if your computer isn’t powerful.

Step 1: Turn off Windows Game Bar in Windows Settings

Since we will be disabling the Game Bar in the registry in step 2, you should make sure this service is set to “off” in Windows to avoid conflicts. First, find “settings” in Windows 10 and select “Gaming”.

In the gaming section, turn off Xbox Game bar by selecting “off”.

On the next tab on the left, “Captures”, make sure the “Background Recording” section is also set to “off”. The text on the toggle bar says “Record in the background while I’m playing a game.”

On the left, move to “Game Mode” and as above, set the setting to “off”.

Finally, new versions of Windows 10 have integrated video card configurations from distribution parties like Nvidia. Check to see if your instance has “Graphics settings” under “Related Settings” on the right side. If so, click on “Graphics Settings” and look for the “Graphics performance preference” menu. Make sure it is set to “Desktop app” and not “Microsoft Store app.”

Step 2: Turn off Windows Game Bar and DVR in Windows Registry

Turn on Windows’ “Run” by typing “run” into the menu bar (the search bar next to the Windows logo in the lower left corner). Type “regedit” and click OK. When opened, Windows may ask the user to confirm the administrator login (Administrative Access). Select “Yes”.

You have now opened the Windows registry editor. In the search bar at the top, type or copy and paste the following:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsGameDVR

If you hear an error, you need to generate information for GameDVR. Right-click on the open Windows folder, select “New”, select “Key” from the menu. A new folder named “New Key” appears. Rename it to “GameDVR”.

On the right side of the window, it will have a single line.

  • (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

Leave it there and right click in the empty space below it. Select “New” and then select DWORD (32bit).

Name the DWORD you just created “AllowgameDVR”. If you just created the key, the default value will be 0x00000000 (0). If your device already has information for the key, double click on “AllowgameDVR” and make sure the “Value data” box is set to 0 as shown in the image above. Press OK and exit.

The built-in DVR in Windows will be turned off, helping to free up more resources for CSGO to run more smoothly. Now, we will move to Windows Update – where it consumes quite a bit of bandwidth.

Turn off the seed feature in Windows Update to speed up bandwidth for CSGO

After fiddling with the registry, this adjustment is as easy as parking the car. Windows 10 introduces a feature that allows other computers to download Windows updates from your computer similar to seeding torrents.

This benefits no one but Microsoft and it certainly affects CSGO bandwidth when connecting to the Steam server. We will limit the bandwidth Microsoft will use to download updates while running in the background.

Step 1: Go to Windows Update settings

Before entering csgo, search for “Windows update settings” in the Windows search bar. Select “Delivery Optimization” in the left menu, then turn off “Allow downloads from other PCs” in the right window.

Step 2: Turn off Windows Delivery Optimizations

Under “Allows downloads from other PCs”, select “Advanced Options” and make sure “Absolute Bandwidth” is selected. Select both boxes “Limit how much bandwidth…” and then enter the value “.1” in both boxes.

This change limits how much bandwidth Windows will use to download updates while running in the background. Setting it to limit it will free up more bandwidth for CSGO to connect to the Steam server.

Note, these changes won’t necessarily make a big difference for every user. Windows update will sometimes ‘reset’ the above adjustments on its own, so check back from time to time to see if they have changed. Currently, we still have to wait for the CSGO engine to be optimized by Valve for Microsoft, but how long it will take is still a mystery.

In general, Microsoft (Windows) is sometimes considered the main cause of some games on Valve running unstable, even though Windows 10 is a very popular operating system. Hope these article settings have helped you to increase FPS in CSGO.
