Play of the Game in Overwatch is a bit of a confusing feature, but overall it’s very popular. The player was celebrated among the 12 heroes of the match, and more importantly, everyone witnessed his classic tackle. As a result, it became such an important part that Blizzard wanted to apply for the rights to Play of the Game.
The first copyright application was filed in late 2016, with the investors being game structure designer Keith Moron and designer Geoff Goodman. This information was only made public earlier this month as the 18-month period of secrecy expired.
Blizzard’s profile includes the Play of the Game system in Overwatch. It records all the events that happen in a match and evaluates those moments and filters them out. Simply put, the total score is recorded and the highest score will be considered as Play of the Game. Blizzard does not claim the copyright for the Play of the Game concept, but for how it is applied.
The records also show how Play of the Game in Overwatch differs from other systems. For example, some games only record the last kill, but there is no guarantee that it will be of any importance to the game.
“There may be a situation occurring earlier in the match where players survive and win despite being outnumbered,” the filing said. Recording the last kill won’t help it be considered the most impressive, given the circumstances above.”
The copyright application process has not yet been approved. But if it does pass, we’ll soon see how Play of the Game works.
Blizzard now has a major update to Symmetra, with major changes to the Horizon Lunar Colony map, and the addition of Endorsement and Looking For Group features.
