Over the past few days, rumors have been circulating in the esports community that Blizzard Entertainment will no longer provide esports support for Heroes of the Storm. On Thursday, the company announced it officially stopped sponsoring the Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm in 2019.

Blizzard’s withdrawal from HOTS esports is among the company’s changing goals. Over the past few months, Blizzard has announced several major products, including new titles for the Diablo series. As a result, Blizzard currently has more projects, both operating and developing, than ever before.

This leads to resource limits, and it seems HOTS is the segment where Blizzard decided to withdraw. Blizzard is moving the development team away from HOTS to other games. This is not the first time Blizzard has canceled its projects. Starcraft: Ghost, despite having full gameplay as well as completed cutscenes, is still ‘unplugged’.

From an esports perspective, the success of Overwatch League season 1 shows that Blizzard has a successful brand model to support another game. Esports HOTS has a much smaller community and unfavorable financial situation. In terms of business, the Over Watch League will be Blizzard’s main focus from here on out.

However, this does not mean that HOTS will end. According to the announcement from Blizzard, new heroes, events and other content continue to be released, but at a slower rate. Let’s wait and see if the community will still support this game when Blizzard no longer updates it as often as before.
