Assassin’s Creed Infinity will be very different from previous versions.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Ubisoft is developing the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed title yet, essentially a “massive online platform that evolves over time”. This game will be called Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a world where players can freely develop whatever they like, in any time and context. Ubisoft says this is its most ambitious project in recent times, to compete with rivals like Fortnite and Apex Legends by providing constant updates to attract players.
While it’s likely to be years away from release, a Ubisoft spokesperson confirmed the existence of the Assassin’s Creed Infinity project, though they wouldn’t comment on specifics. A spokesperson said Ubisoft’s mission is “to exceed the expectations of fans who have demanded a more cohesive approach.” It’s not yet known exactly what that means, but many fans have been hoping for more classic gameplay and a return to the Assassin vs. Templar — something an online game can offer.
Ubisoft said in its statement that Infinity will be developed under a new “cross-development structure” between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec. These teams will “guide, develop, develop, and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed, including a major upcoming project, codenamed Assassin’s Creed Infinity.”
Recent installments in the 14-year-old Assassin’s Creed series have grown in size. The most recent title, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla coming out in 2020, can easily take players over 100 hours to fully explore and complete. In this sense, the Assassin’s Creed titles provided an experience of creative freedom by allowing players to actually spend most of their time completing any side quests. This upcoming Assassin’s Creed game would be the next logical step in this trend.
With Infinity, if it materializes in the way described in this report, Ubisoft will likely take the ideas of popular titles like Fortnite and GTA Online to create a brand new part of Assassin’s Creed. Games like GTA Online and other live service titles resemble platforms that evolve and evolve over time, with new content added regularly to keep people playing and spending more.
