10 reviews before the finals of SKT T1

The two title contenders are about to enter the final match at the Beijing Bird’s Nest Stadium in China. SK Telecom T1 will once again face Samsung Galaxy – a re-enactment of the 2016 World Championship.

Here are our 10 pre-match reviews.

SKT’s Yoke of Domination

Many people are fed up with SKT winning all the games and just want them to lose. I am not among them. Each championship that SKT has won is only one part of the story of a legend. In my eyes, the biggest wish of the Fans or Anti-Fan is not just for SKT to fail, but they want SKT to lose at the hands of their favorite team. The stronger SKT is, when they fail, the greater the glory for the winner will be. Why would you want this glory to fall into the hands of another team?

In traditional sports, there will always be dynasties that people talk about. We will certainly talk about SKT for many years to come. TPA is already a distant memory and SSW is following that path as well. But Faker and SKT? You will have to remember them for a long time, especially if they can complete this 3 championship streak in a row. There’s always an unspeakable and eerie thrill to watching SKT compete in all of the Worlds Championships. They are slowly becoming terminators – like the villains in the movies.

SKT’s Tactical Focus

1. Huni needs to avoid ganking to be able to split push effectively late game.

2. Offer safe play solutions to counter SSG’s stranglehold to death strategy.

3. Bang and Wolf have to at least draw with Ruler and CoreJJ.

SSG .’s Tactical Focus

1. Ambition needs to take advantage of SKT’s “weak” early game to give his one lane advantage.

2. Crown must be active around the map and not get sucked into a 1v1 fight with Faker.

3. Don’t get stuck in a speed race but play with a plan instead.

AGAIN KOREA vs KOREA

Maybe an all-Korea finals isn’t the most exciting, but it’s definitely going to be a matchup at the highest level in League of Legends. Both teams have been showing their destructive performances throughout the past two years. Last year, they needed all 5 games to decide the winner. And once again SKT showed a wobbly before the match full of grace.

SPACE BETWEEN AREA

Yes, it was quite difficult but in the end Korea still prevailed over the rest of the world. Even SKT has been defeated 4 times in this year’s tournament, 2 games lost to Misfits Gaming – second seed in Europe and 2 games against second seed in China – Royal Never Give Up . They also won in a very orderly manner against the number two seed AHQ of the Taiwan Region.

SSG was also defeated twice by RNG in the group stage. The only reason that the Korean region is dominant probably comes from Faker. The decline of the Korean teams is partly showing the level of balance between regions. In this tournament, the Chinese, European and NA teams have performed very well and there is no longer a big difference in skill.

“TALENT TRAINING SCHOOL” NA LCS

One very interesting thing about this finals is that SKT Huni and SSG CoreJJ are both former members of the NA LCS. After thorough research, I have come to the conclusion that no matter what the outcome of the Finals is… NA is still the winner. NA imports foreign talent → teaches them → sends them home and wins championships → perhaps NA is the place to train the world’s top talent.

THE STANDARD OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE

I have to say…it’s a shame that not a single Chinese team made it to the finals. The Bird’s Nest Stadium is one of the most iconic stadiums in China, and the Chinese fans were very disappointed in the home teams. It would be great if the Finals were a Sino-Korean war but no, maybe we’ll have to wait until next year. Royal Never Give Up performed excellently when defeating Samsung 2-0 in the group stage, and they are considered the 2nd best performing team in this tournament. Remember, this is only the first time their roster has entered Worlds, and it symbolizes the return of domestic Chinese talent. WE shows us a unified formation, tactics. EDG also launched the promising young AD carry world – iBoy with a short but impressive performance. China already has the infrastructure in place and they have a lot of talent that can be trained. It’s only a matter of time before NA tries to import Chinese players again – and I very much hope China will be the first region to overtake Korea at Worlds.

THIS IS THE BEST FINAL FINAL IN HISTORY

I said the same thing last year, but I have to say it again: this is the most exciting Finals season ever. If you’re frustrated by the Korean final, think of Worlds as a journey, not a destination. Let’s look back at the miracle of Fnatic, the grit of GAM or the revival of the Chinese. You will see we have quite a lot of stories and characters! However, after all the action and ups and downs, our movie still returns with 2 main characters SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy. I don’t know how much longer SKT can thwart dreams, but it’s scary. Let’s wait and see if Samsung Galaxy can successfully take revenge? Or again, they are just one page in the story of the legendary SKT.

JORDAN FAKER

In this tournament, Faker completely carried his teammates on his back. It’s impossible to ban all of Faker’s champions, and this guy rarely makes mistakes. So, I theorized some ideas on how SSG can restrain Faker, just hold on because he’s unstoppable.

1. 2vs1 Midlane. It’s not a mid camp, it’s a change of bot lane to mid. And pick a strong clear minion champion or something in the bot lane.

2. Gank mid whenever possible, don’t gank anywhere else! Watch when he doesn’t have flash.

3. Ban Galio.

How about you? In your opinion, how to restrain Faker?

I spent a lot of time talking about SKT. SKT this, SKT that… But let’s do a test and forget about the names from the two teams. Which team looks more prominent and formidable at Worlds 2017? Surely you would say SSG. And which team has gone through the more difficult path? Again, make sure you answer SSG. The problem, however, is that I ran this test at multiple stages. And at every stage, SKT still dominates. SKT relies heavily on Faker. Yeah, but the meta isn’t conducive to mid lane carrying the team. SKT was at its best, with one of the remaining lanes showing signs of improvement. Huni, as usual, has been erratic this season. Once he was up, I think he was one of the best players around – and at times, he contributed as much to SKT’s wins as Faker. But CuVee is clearly more stable and solid in the big games. A lot of the opponent’s attention was on the SSG top laner but he was still able to shine. That’s the bottom line for me – which top laner will win? If CuVee can restrain Huni then as he expected, the pressure will be on Bang and Wolf’s shoulders. That doesn’t happen in this tournament. SSG is a team that slowly crushes the opponent, but SKT is not an opponent they can easily implement that style of play. If SSG has an early game advantage against SKT like so many other teams have done, it will be difficult for SKT to regain it. How SKT starts the game will determine the whole story.
