Why does Fallout use blue and yellow so much in the game?

According to the Fallout series, war never changes, as does the typical set of colors in the game. Blue and yellow have been the main color scheme since the game was first released in 1997, but very few people know why this color set was chosen. In the latest interview from two veteran members of Fallout, they revealed the reason.

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, currently directors of The Outer Worlds project at studio Obsidian, sat down for an interview with Game Informer to talk about their upcoming action RPG title. However, the two also discussed a bit about the Fallout series. According to Tim Cain, the famous blue and yellow in the game could never have been used if things had changed a bit.

When Fallout 1 was in development, Tim cain was the lead programmer, and was responsible for coming up with the set of colors the members had to choose to create the game’s characters. At that time, the game did not use blue and yellow as stated. Cain forced the development team to choose: use blue and yellow somewhere in Fallout, or they would be removed from the game entirely.

As we all know, the team chose these two colors instead of letting them be removed from the game. Since then, blue and yellow have remained the iconic color sets in Fallout, ranging from vault dweller’s skins to Vault Boy’s. This set of colors will continue to be applied to new parts when Fallout returns to Bethesda.

Had it been decided otherwise, the Fallout series would have been completely different from what it is today. Certainly blue and yellow will continue to be the color sets used in the future of the series.
