The Beginning of Pokimane on Twitch
Imane Anys was born in Morocco in 1996, before emigrating to Canada, where she started her streaming career. The 23-year-old streamer combined one of her favorite games, Pokémon, with her name, Imane, to create the username Pokimane.
In a 2019 stream, she humorously explained that the reason she didn’t use her real name was because her last name was Anys, just one letter wrong with the word Anus (meaning butt). “When you combine my first and last name, Imane Anys, you can write like this, ‘I’m an anus’” (I am the ass). This is a prime example of her sense of humour, which attracts a lot of viewers.
While the most popular channels on Twitch in 2013 were mainly focused on gaming, Pokimane was one of the first to focus on interacting with viewers – it wasn’t until much later that Just Chatting appeared in 2018.
However, it is the passion for playing League of Legends combined with the constant interaction with viewers that helps Pokimane’s channel grow rapidly on Twitch.
Pokimane’s channel continued to grow while she attended McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. However, Pokimane decided to leave school and move back to Beverly Hills, California to pursue a full-time streaming career.
The Canadian streamer started to explode in 2018 when she became one of the most popular Fortnite gamers after being invited by Epic Games to the Pro-Am tournament at E3 2018 and getting sponsored.

On September 1, Pokimane announced the launch of her clothing products on Instagram, which she designed herself.
On the debut video, she said: “I used to be so familiar with empty t-shirts with the streamer’s name printed on it. I wanted to create a product that people could enjoy wearing, and it was simple and easy to wear.”
The Morroca-Canadian streamer is at its most successful, exploding across various platforms. According to SocialBlade, as of September 2019, she is the 15th most followed channel on Twitch. At the time of writing, she has nearly 3.5 million followers on Twitch stream.
