Valve wants you to fight more than hide with Dueling Fates

With this update, it will be easier for new players to adapt

After months of waiting and anticipation, Dota 2 fans finally got their Dueling Fates update this past week. Big updates like this usually happen around this time of year. It contains new items, changed abilities, and adds up to 2 new heroes, Dark Willow and Pangolier.

Like any major update, Dueling Fates this time around will change or break the winning rules that often apply in the current meta. We’ll probably have to wait a few more weeks to see how these changes affect the game – especially with the arrival of two new heroes. The main motivation of this patch is clear: to attract new players to Dota 2 and encourage combat wherever you are in the game.

The first is the “Turbo Mode”: increases the amount of XP and gold received, and allows players to buy items anywhere on the map. The purpose of the mode is to shorten the match time (like easy mode in Dota 1) for new players.

Hero guides in the game are more accessible, I have seen some new tooltip menus in this update. In addition, you also receive additional items when playing 1 of 10 heroes selected by Valve every day. With these 2 features, new Dota 2 players will be able to experiment and enjoy the match faster.

For old gamers or those who prefer traditional Dota 2, this update encourages more teamfights. Combat is the heart of Dota – the most fun to watch and the time to show off your skills.

There’s a lot of motivation to get into lane a little bit in the jungle. Jungling (jungle) is now heavily nerfed as Iron Talon – the most useful item for jungling – has been removed. Meanwhile, out-of-lane creeps now reward more XP and gold than ever before. Therefore, we have more reasons to go lane and farm creeps.

Bounty runes (giving gold and XP) are moved to more contested locations. This means that junglers (junglers) no longer easily eat runes when moving between jungle fields. It also means we’ll see more rune wins.

Obviously Valve is always adding map changes and adding items, but Dueling Fates is the first update where Gaben decided to remove an item from the game. Iron Talon’s departure is a clear message that Valve wants to send to young people who like to stay in the jungle: get out of the jungle and support your teammates more.

In terms of game items, this update also adds a few new toys and one of the most interesting is the Meteor Hammer. Blue hammer creates fireballs after 3 seconds of casting. It’s not very special in itself, but the Meteor Hammer is the first magic weapon that can deal damage to buildings. Champions like Pugna, Techies, and Jakiro have all been able to deal damage to turrets before, but thanks to this item, pushing turrets will become more convenient.

Meteor Hammer is just a small part of this update. The base now has no shrines, meaning players can’t heal as often when defending highground. Siege creeps now spawn 10 minutes earlier – not only that, they are also ‘invulnerable’ for a short time as the glyph now affects not only buildings but also creeps. More specifically, tier 4 turrets (protecting ancient) no longer automatically heal.

Thus, the team that is behind the turret will be disadvantaged, but on the opposite side, the team that is winning has momentum to continue pushing. In the old meta, it was easy to win most of the teamfights outside, but when pushing inwards, things became very difficult. Even if you don’t lose, the game will be boring, because neither team wants to attack first. Thanks to the ‘nerf’ in the base, the match will become more one-sided than before (ie, no longer successfully defend the base and flip the bet as much as before).

In addition, each hero has its own talents to choose from. In addition, the Abilities in the talents of all heroes have been reworked. Talents has changed dota a lot since its debut in The New Journey (2016) update. Now, Valve has improved them to make the hero roles more functional. Like Bane’s spellcaster, for example, this hero can now take physical damage from enemies thanks to the new talent rework.

Between the champion changes and the shift in focus to more combat, Valve also clearly defined the direction of Dota 2 – minimizing flips once the beneficial team has a lot in the lead. With Turbo Mode and easy-to-access tutorials, Valve now favors and cares for new players a lot more than before. If Dueling Fates makes the game more engaging, as Valve has suggested, then this is clearly the best opportunity for new players to jump in.
