The number of CSGO players has continued to grow over the past several months and now the number has reached a new big milestone.

On April 17, CSGO’s continuous player count reached 1,298,888. Not only is it CSGO’s biggest number, but it also surpassed Dota 2 when the game was still the most played.

Valve’s two esports titles have long competed for the #1 and #2 spot on Steam’s most played games of the past decade. It is also not true to say competition, because the number of Dota 2 players has always been more and higher than its FPS brother. The peak of the two games ran from early 2015 to early 2016: Dota 2 averaged over 500,000 players and peaked at 1,291,328.

At the same time, CSGO is on an upward trend. Even though the battle pass for this update is over, CSGO continues to grow. Part of that is thanks to CSGO changing to a free-to-play model, similar to Dota 2.

Some people think that the reason for the increase in players is the Covid-19 epidemic, which has helped the game community to grow stronger.

CSGO is in a great position right now. Valve’s continued care for the game has resulted in a massive increase in players, as well as a sustained esports market share that not only drives loyal fans to grow. All of this happened before the Corona epidemic, and it is still happening in the face of fierce competition from Riot Games rival Valorant.

While this is good news for Counter-Strike fans, the game is still a long way from catching up with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ peak.
