Ubisoft has been quite generous in sharing information about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey since the game was announced at E3 2018, including screenshots, trailers, and gameplay that show off role-playing and dialogue elements. Now, we continue to know more thanks to the Reddit AMA with Johnathan Dumont, the game’s creative director.
When asked if the game has a side story, Dumont confirmed Kassandra would be the side story choice in Odyssey. He said: “Yes, we will have a side story in the game. It is about Kassandra and her journey.” Dumont also admitted that, while Kassandra’s storyline is a side story, players are still in full control of their journey and that there is “no right or wrong direction” to play the game.
It’s rare to see an Assassin’s Creed game with a female protagonist. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the only main installment in the franchise to feature a female protagonist. By making Kassandra a side story, Ubisoft continues to diversify the gamer market, helping to attract more female fans of this game series.
Obviously diversifying games is a good thing, but it hasn’t stopped some small communities from complaining, accusing big companies of “diversifying”. More specifically, Battlefield V saw some gamers oppose the addition of female soldiers in the context of World War II. However, with what happens at this year’s E3 we should see a wider variety of games despite these negative reviews, with many titles featuring female protagonists.
Regardless of which character is a side story, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will change the formula of this popular series more than Origins did. With dialogue choices, emotions, and lots of equipment, Odyssey wants to turn itself into the most potential game possible with the setting of Ancient Greece.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will launch in 2019 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
