According to SteamDB, Steam peaked with 18,801,944 players last Sunday at 14:20 GMT, the highest number of concurrent users ever. Record previous was 18,537,490, set on 14 Jan 2018.

While this number is impressive, the actual number of players who were actually playing the game at the time was lower than it was in January 2018, with more than seven million playing, while the above record was only 5,956. 968 people.

So what is the reason that all players online at the same time on February 2nd? Possibly thanks to the titles in the Steam rankings. Of course, this is just a guess, as SteamDB doesn’t provide any additional information about player activity. The top names at the moment are (in descending order) Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, Grand Theft Auto V and Monster Hunter: World, which together account for around 2.5 million players.

Recent reports indicate that an increasing number of Steam users own PC-connected VR devices and all games Half-Life are all free before launch Half-Life: Alyx.

Even so, there is still a big gap between regular players and platform users. Last year, Steam hit a billion accounts and many of them are probably just bots to trade on Steam Market or serve other purposes such as spam or fraud. In addition, the number of online visits can come from a lot of idle people logging into Steam while doing other things.

Anyway, all the above signs point to Steam’s actual user base being quite large and the platform will continue to grow strong.
