Although Sony has finally announced the price and release date of PlatStation 5, they still have a lot to share with the gaming community. For example, Sony CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the PS5 will be backward compatible with 99% of PS4 games at launch, but we don’t know if it will support older consoles. Unfortunately, it looks like games from PS1 to PS3 will not be supported.
In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu after the PS5 showcase, Ryan confirmed the team didn’t have time to develop backwards compatibility for any PS1, PS2 or PS3 games. “While developing backward compatibility for PS4, we also needed to focus our efforts on developing the new high-speed SSD and the new Dual Sense controller,” said Ryan. Therefore, it is with regret to announce that we were unable to implement compatibility in older models.”
The fact that the PS5 is only backward compatible with PS4 games was revealed by Ubisoft on the homepage, but was soon removed from the website. Some people will certainly see this as the big minus point of PS5 when compared to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Because both of Microsoft’s new consoles have easy compatibility with old games from as far back as Xbox 360.
In addition, Sony also announced other new ways for players to access PS4 games on PS5. Similar to Xbox Games Pass, the new PlayStation Plus Collection service will let users who have purchased PS Plus play “the games that have made the PS4 brand” such as The Last of Us: Remastered, Persona 5and God of War (2018).
Many other games announced at the PS5 Showcase also attracted the gaming world such as Final Fantasy 16 and Harry Potter RPG Hogwards Leggacy. PS5 will be priced at standard $499.99 and digital at $399.99 and will be available globally on November 19.
