He thinks that the idea that SSDs make HDDs extinct is not correct, because it does not take into account the case that large data centers will increasingly require more data to store, and its growth rate. will be around 30%/year.

In exabyte data centers, about 90% of data is stored on disk, and about 10% is stored on flash memory. Therefore, the two will go hand in hand, because each has its own advantages/disadvantages, they will complement each other, helping to create and scale data centers.

As for the smaller data centers, petabyte range, depending on the needs, SSD or HDD will prevail. For example, if performance or power consumption is a priority, SSD will be a reasonable choice, and if the priority is on cost, it will be in favor of HDD.

In addition, Morris also said that the appearance of QLC flash chips (4 bits/cell) will not affect the correlation between SSD and HDD too much. Those who support QLC SSDs replacing HDDs often use arguments based on reducing data capacity; ie SSD QLC has better real-time data compression (on the fly), thereby helping to save more data, while HDD can’t, thereby increasing the cost per data bit. Is there a big difference?

However, Morris says that in order to make a fair comparison, the raw capacity of the two must be compared. It is true that SSDs have very effective real-time data compression, but HDDs can now do this, not only SSDs, even in some cases it is encrypted.
