If you already own Rocket League, you will receive over 200 items and your Steam copy will continue to run and update.
Therefore, do not worry too much if you own Rocket League on Steam. This car soccer esports game will be free this summer. However, new PC players will have to get the game on the Epic Games Store.
The Steam version will be fully supported with future updates and features, and you’ll continue to do the same old things from before, like buying items or Rocket Pass. And yet, if you are a console gamer, you will be playing in groups as well as facing those who own the PC version on the Epic Games Store. Psyonix also supports inventory and a cross-platform leveling system if you want to link to an Epic account.
Those who have played Rocket League online or have the game before this free update will receive a lot of in-game items to make up for the $20 they spent. Here is the reward information:
- All Rocket League Brand DLC Released Before Free Game
- The title “Est. 20XX” showing five players playing Rocket League for the first time
- More than 200 Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
- Golden Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro Wheels
- Huntress Player Banner
This information is not surprising. Team Fortress 2 is free for four years after launch, and Rocket League turns five this month. Free is expected for successful multiplayer games (and for those that don’t, change it quickly before it’s too late).
However, the biggest change lies in the fact that Psyonix was bought by Epic. Another big change is probably when Epic and Psyonix abandoned loot boxes and added shop items last year. However, it has become the new norm in modern gaming, as people increasingly hate random rewards (loot boxes). Psyonix also stopped supporting Linux and Mac earlier this year.
Psyonix has yet to say exactly when the free game update will happen, except it will happen this summer.
