League of Legends developer Riot Games sued the CS organization “Riot Squad” for its too similar name and trademark infringement.
The lawsuit says Riot asked Riot Squad not to use the word “Riot” in their communications or products. The game’s developer is demanding compensation from the esports organization for “damage during use.”
The game developer League of Legends – which owns the “Riot” and “Riot Games” brands – accused the team and management of Riot Squad of “exploiting” the company’s game brand to benefit the organization.
“Riot Squad unfairly and illegally used and exploited the RIOT trademark to promote and advertise the fledgling esports organization that it claimed was “founded by gamers, for gamers,” according to the memo. take.
Riot alleges that the defendants are expecting and contemplating creating a connection between themselves and the game developer Riot Games, in the hope that “consumers will misunderstand that the esports organization is related to, sponsored or endorsed, affiliated with Riot and its popular products and services.”
The Tencent-owned company also asked the California court to order Riot Squad to “destroy” everything that uses the name, especially ads that say “Riot”.
Despite being present in many different esports disciplines, Riot Squad has not yet entered League of Legends in North America. Part of that is probably because the number of League of Legends tournaments in this region is limited by Riot’s fake season system.
This sued organization was only founded by Robert Harden and Anthony Santiesteban in March 2019. Since its inception 8 months ago, the team’s social network has achieved a modest number of 8,133 followers on Twitter.
The Chicago-based organization participates in Fortnite, Apex Legends, PUBG and Rainbow Six Siege, and has Kristin “Chibi” Stein and Taylor “THump” Humphries on the stream lineup.
Riot Squad declined to comment after being contacted.
