PC is still the favorite platform of game developers

Game PC

PC continues to be the preferred gaming platform for developers, and it has surpassed both console and mobile games. Game Developers Course surveyed nearly 4,000 game developers to draw this conclusion.

According to a report from the gaming industry 2019, 56% of survey respondents have launched their most recent game on PC, which is the first time this number has surpassed 50%. Mobile/tablet was the next most popular platform, reaching 38%.

When asked on which platform they are developing games, two-thirds answered PC. 62% said their next game will launch on PC – console peaking at 32% and mobile/tablet at 35%. “Once again, PC continues to top and grow each year, while developers with other platforms continue to hold up,” the report notes.

PC was the most chosen platform when asked which platform “are you most interested in as a developer right now”: reaching 60%, beating Nintendo Switch with 45%.

The survey also shows what developers think about PC game selling platforms like Steam, GOG, and the Epic Store. Only 6% of developers agree that Steam taking 30% of the profits from the game is reasonable, while 17% say it is “probably” acceptable. Another 17% said they weren’t sure about this, while the last 32% said Steam didn’t deserve that much profit – 32% were also the largest group of respondents. 27% answered “maybe” not accepting this number.

However, Steam remains the most popular platform for selling PC games, with 47% of developers using Steam to sell their games. Next is selling games directly on the developer’s website, accounting for 26%. Meanwhile, itch.io, Humble Store and GOG are used less than 20%.

The survey also asked developers how they feel about Virtual Reality, loot boxes and working hours: nearly half of developers said they work more than 40 hours a week.
