Overwatch director talks about the possibility of adding Battle Royale to the game

Anyone who’s been playing games in 2018 knows that battle royale is trending for the year. PUBG craze pits 100 people against each other. Since then, many similar modes have mushroomed in other games. However, Blizzard is not sure this trend will work with Overwatch.

It’s clear that the demand for a Battle Royale mode in Overwatch is huge, but the game director doesn’t want to follow everyone. Game director Jeff Kaplan just talked to Kotaku about his feelings regarding Battle Royale modes and why bringing it into Overwatch would be challenging.

Kaplan made it clear in the interview that he is a big fan of this mode, and of PUBG. And he said the team didn’t want to rush it without a serious plan. The imbalance in 1v1 and with the variety of heroes is the biggest obstacle to bringing this mode to Overwatch…

First of all, Overwatch is a game about heroes, and the qualities that make a battle royale game so good are the ability to find, loot, and be fair to everyone… Overwatch wasn’t designed to be 1v1. All heroes are not balanced against other heroes.

I think there are also some technical challenges, in terms of open space… Combat is usually between 15 and 40 meters. Point B of Hanamura doji is 45 meters wide. I don’t think people realize how small the map is. What makes Fortnite and PUBG great is that you can fight at great distances.”

Of course, everyone wants to see the battle royale mode appear in Overwatch, the ideas that Kaplan gives are very logical. For more loot and effective ranged combat, Overwatch needed a redesign.

However, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Blizzard has a very creative design team, and it’s possible that they’ve figured out the crux of the matter and are working on a way to include this mode in Overwatch. Blizzard doesn’t like to rush things, so it’s likely that it will take a long time until the team finds a suitable solution.
