Outlast 1 and 2 have sold 15 million copies for a total of $64 million. Speaking at Quo Vadis in Berlin (Germany), game developer Philippe Morin said that while he aspires to “do something completely different” in his next project, the success of the Outlast series is hard to ignore. With that in mind, Red Barrels’ next game will be “separate” from its predecessors, according to sources from GI.biz, but will take place in the same world of the game.
“If you had told me a year ago that the project we were working on was going to be a sequel to the game, I would probably have said, ‘I don’t think so myself,’” Morin said. “It is an ideological struggle. On the one hand, you want more motivation as a game developer, but at the same time we have to think about things as a company owner.”
“That’s why it took us so many months to find something that both pleases our fans and delights us at the same time. In the big studios, they might say ‘If you guys get tired, we can give this game to another team’. But not here.”
Morin added that he and the team are in the drafting stages of the next game, and are considering their budget. Outlast had a production budget of $1.36 million CAD (about $1.06 million), while Outlast 2 cost five times that.
“Do we need the same funding?” Morin asked. “Can it be lower? Right now, I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ll always make sure people have plans ready to use if needed: plans A, B, C, and D.”
“I always tell the team that, because the studio is owned by the developers, our goals as developers are just as important as the goals of our shareholders. We don’t want to change this.”
