Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer gave an interview about his time with FaZe Clan, his changes in the new team. In addition, he also talked about the problems with the old Fnatic and not having enough time to prepare for the events.
You have been with FaZe since August, what do you think about the new house?
Very happy. We played together a lot – sometimes we won, sometimes we lost, but overall it was fun.
If you had to compare your current role with what you did in Fnatic, what would have changed?
At Fnatic, I’m a little more free than I am now and of course there’s a reason why. I’m very happy about this, it was the right decision. I still get to do some of the things I love and used to do, but the other change is that I play in completely new positions on CT. This took a while for me to get used to, but I’m slowly learning everything.
He has been with Fnatic for more than 3 years. Of course, with such a long time, he must have had some feelings for the organization. How did you feel when you had to leave Fnatic?
I mean it’s very difficult. I’ve received invitations before, but I never really thought about them. But this time, both myself and the team decided to make a change even though I changed teams. After that, I felt it was easier for me to accept an invitation from one of the strongest teams in the world.
Fnatic didn’t play well, from one perspective it was an easy decision. But on the other hand it’s very difficult, because I’ve always been proud to represent Fnatic. It’s a great organization and I love the people who work there. They’ve always been nice to me and try to do everything they can for me, so it’s hard to see in this respect.
Speaking of Fnatic’s constant drop in form, what do you think are the main reasons behind it?
It’s very difficult to explain to everyone. I think our roster is under a lot of pressure because in my opinion, Fnatic was once the king of Counter-Strike. We put a lot of pressure on us to win from the beginning, and a lot of people thought that if fnatic didn’t win, the members would feel bad. I think that’s the main reason.
Have you ever thought that if given more time, things would be better?
You can’t think like that, I don’t think so because that would be more harmful to the team. Thinking about how we first split up and got back together, everyone agrees it was a silly mistake. Furthermore, we weren’t playing badly back then, the team was always in the top 4 in tournaments and second in the ELEAGUE Season 1 final. We said it wasn’t enough for everyone to keep playing together. Remember, it’s the biggest prize pool fnatic has ever won.
Speaking of playing style, do you see any similarities between the old Fnatic team and FaZe Clan?
I think everyone has a pretty similar playing style. I want to compare it with pronax days because there are a lot of similarities: the team has really good players, good IGL and only plays CS, beating the opponent with the above. And if it doesn’t work, we will discuss the strategy we used. The team can play CS, simple and easy but also put in heavy tactical hand to beat the opponent.
From my point of view, he’s pretty close to dennis. What do you think of his performance with Astralis at the BLAST Pro Series?
I think he’s doing really well and I’m happy for him, because I know he’s having a hard time at GODSENT. I think he deserves more than that and he’s proven that he absolutely deserves a good team. I’m very happy for him and think if dennis waits a little longer, he will join a strong team after the major, because that’s when CS is always making big changes. I’m pretty sad he can’t play here, but the rules are the rules. Maybe this rule is a bit silly. Dennis should take a break, relax and wait for a good offer. I’m sure he will, he totally deserves it.
He was in the Counter-Strike phase where one team completely overpowered the world. Now, the competition environment has become more competitive. In your opinion, what is the most appropriate way of playing for a team to rise up in the current competitive environment?
In a way, it’s always a good thing to beat an opponent by playing basic CS because it’s extremely difficult to play catch. If you play tactically, you will need more time than the current top 3 teams. You have almost no time to practice because you have to move constantly. It is also difficult for the teams to catch their cards.
With that said, you need a few tactics to guard against. To answer this question is difficult because there are many good teams that cannot attend the events. For example, G2 did not qualify for EPL S6, but they will be at the upcoming ECS. Now, G2 has a lot of time to practice tactics and read other teams’ tactics – a luxury that teams currently do not have. There is also Gambit, Natus Vincere and many other strong teams that have a lot of time to practice ‘catch’, making the upcoming tournament extremely difficult.
You mentioned tournament saturation in your previous answer. So, have you ever thought about skipping some events to better prepare for the big tournaments? This seemed to hold true for Astralis at the ELEAGUE Major the previous January.
Now they’ve won so we have to say it was the right decision, but before we reap the results, I think it was a stupid decision, because you’re under a lot of pressure to win, especially then. is a Major. If they didn’t win the Major, people would say it was a stupid decision.
SK Gaming went into Cologne, they won that and made it to the quarterfinals, which is also a good result. I think everyone should get some extra rest, which means we should be able to see more quality games and more expectations than we have now.
Personally, you have to be in the entire league right now because that’s what everyone is doing. If you do not participate, you will be downgraded. And like I said, this puts pressure on your ability to prepare for more tournaments.
