Ninjas in Pajamas withdraw from Dota 2 once again.
The esports organization has just announced the disbanding of the Dota roster and is evaluating whether to be present in the sport. This is the third time NiP has decided to withdraw from Dota 2 in the organization’s history.
‘This year has been hit hard by the unstable ecosystem. With DPC and The International on hold indefinitely, we have great difficulty getting financial stability with Dota 2. Talent is highly concentrated in the EU region. That means higher maintenance costs and lower revenue,” NiP COO Jonas Gundersen said on the team’s website.
It’s just a chapter. We’re not giving up, we’re not uninstalling and we’re not going to low prio. Thank you all ❤️

Ninjas in Pajamas had a pretty poor 2020 competition year overall. The organization got off to a good start by qualifying for the ESL One Los Angeles Major, but the switch from LAN to online has impacted the multi-region roster. Captain Peter “ppd” Dager took a break from the competition, and then NiP dropped out of this lineup to take on the Chicken Fighters.
While Chicken Fighters looked strong in the first few weeks, the team struggled after returning to NiP and repeatedly failed in tournaments that featured Europe’s top teams. NiP currently competes in the second tier EPIC League.
NiP is the latest organization to leave Dota 2. In 2020, many organizations such as Chaos Esports Club, Geek Farm and Team Adroid have withdrawn from the game or ceased all activities. A lot of organizations joined Dota 2 in the 2019-2020 season and quickly changed their minds, like Furia Esrpots, ForZe and Cloud.
The old Dota 2 roster of Ninjas in Pajamas is as follows:
- Charlie “CharlieDota” Arat
- Ondřej “Supream^” tarha
- Jonáš “SabeRLight-” Volek
- Adrian “Era” Kryeziu
- Mikhail “Misha” Agatov
With a 5-4 record in EPIC League Division 2, it’s unclear if they will continue to play together after that.
Will NiP leave Dota 2 forever?
Ninjas in Pajamas have dropped and returned to Dota many times over the past 6 years. Therefore, the possibility of a return in the future is possible. The organization first joined the game in 2015 but only left a year later because of poor results. The year 2017 was similar.
2018, NiP formed a new team with PDD as captain. Thanks to ppd’s ability, he brought in a strong squad for the next 18 months. This approach has brought success, including a spot at The International 2019. This roster almost disbanded after TI9, but PPD remained in the organization and created a new roster to win the right to each Major in the 2019-2020 season. .
It’s not clear if the organization has any new plans yet, but NIP says it’s not the end of time with Dota 2. Gundersen said NiP will “rethink tactics and which regions to enter, overall.” . That is, they can recruit a team in another region.
