How Leon and Clare in Resident Evil 2 Remake were recreated

Recently announced at the Resident Evil press conference at San Diego Comic-Con, the PlayStation Blog has gathered a lot of information about Resident Evil 2, from the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi.

Remaking a classic is no easy feat, but the talented team at Capcom responsible for developing Resident Evil 2 are certainly up for the challenge. Hirabayashi said great demand from fans made this new Resident Evil 2 come out.

This isn’t just a remake – it’s a complete redesign of Resident Evil 2, including the Raccoon City Police Department (RCPD) and Raccoon City cityscape.

Leon Kennedy

Talking about the topic related to Leon’s youthful appearance in Resident Evil 2. When compared to later versions, the goal of RE2 Remake is to create a rookie appearance that contrasts with the hero Leon has become in the following versions.

Having the worst first day of work in history (the police station canceled the welcome party and everything else), the Capcom team went to great lengths to make sure Leon was brand new, but still keep the familiar features in modern graphics.

As a result, the team created a realistic version of Leon, using photogrammetry technology to scan the character’s costumes into the game and add small details and changes afterwards.

Claire Redfield

Resident Evil 2 wouldn’t be complete without Claire, the heroine who travels to Raccoon City in search of her brother Chris. Claire is redesigned using the technology mentioned above, scanning real-life outfits to capture every detail of her character’s outfit.

The team has been arguing a lot about her new look, and how much should the new look keep compared to the original Resident Evil on PlayStation 1.

In the end, the team decided to create the image that would stick with the image of Claire driving a motorcycle into Raccoon City. The team is very pleased with the final design.

Raccoon City

Regarding the city, the team focused on two key concepts that have permeated the game: the feeling of wetness and having to deal with the darkness.

Using powerful RE technology, the team achieved their goal, creating a sense of fear with in-game images. The events of Resident Evil 2 take place in the rain in Raccoon City, causing flooding in some parts of the city, while others are a tragedy of zombie encounters and dangers. Danger lurks in the dark.

In the end, the game wouldn’t be Resident Evil 2 without zombies! Hirabayashi and team discuss the design of the zombies in the remake.

Simply put, Capcom wants to create something scary that you yourself don’t want to be bitten! Zombies are also created from the concept of wet and dark, ensuring every moment of combat is as intense as the previous one.

Resident Evil 2 Remake will be available on PlatStation 4 on January 25, 2019.
