How to Play (Hero, Hero Power, Treasure, Season)

The game mode is quite simple if you have participated in Dungeon Run’s PvE in the past. The game has 10 different Heroes, but you will only be able to choose between 4 of them when starting a new journey. From there, the player will choose his original Hero Power and Treasure. In Early Access Duels, each Hero will have only one Hero Power and Treasure. Then, when the mode officially launches, from 2 Hero Power and 4 Treasure will be expanded to 3 Hero Power and 6 Treasure in total. Although Early Access is not diverse at first, the mode will later open up many different gameplay for each Hero.

After selecting, the player will switch to the deck building screen. You will create a deck of 15 cards to use – up to 1 copy per card. Once that’s done, the player will start facing off against another player in the same round. For example, if you play a new deck and have no extra cards, you will only be playing against players with the same new deck as you. Like a regular Dungeon Run, after each match, you can develop more decks by choosing an additional group of cards. Then, slowly, players will be able to choose new powerful treasures to help them win against the opponent.

To keep things fresh, Duels will be constantly changing each season. In Season 1 (Wizard Duels), players will choose characters from Scholomance Academy as Heroes and use cards from the Basic, Classic, Naxxramas, One Night in Karazhan, and Scholomance Academy sets. When the season ends, everything changes. We will have new Hero, Hero Power, Treasure and of course decks from other adventure/expansion.

In addition, the sets of cards in the deck will be selected by the development team. If a card is viewed too strongly in the new mode, it may be banned.

Casual & Heroic Mode

One of the important points about Duels is that it has a system similar to Arena. You will play until you win 12 games or lose 3 games. However, unlike the Arena in that (which always requires a fee to attend), Duels will have two formats:

  • Casual: Free but no rewards. You can play to your heart’s content!
  • Heroic: Paid, but with additional rewards depending on which distance you end up, similar to Arena. Players can completely play Duels without paying extra. But if you think you are good enough, you can participate in competitions to earn rewards.

Like the Arena side, the Heroic format costs 150 gold or $1.99 to join. Interestingly, all Arena tickets will change to “Tavern Tickets”. You can use them in Arena or Duels. So, if you own a lot of Arena tickets, you can join Duels for free a few times!

Both Casual and Heroic modes will display MMR. You will be placed with someone of the same level. However, Casual and Heroic MMR are separate, so playing one side won’t affect the other.

Early Access, release time

Early Access for Duels has started October 22. However, only those who pre-purchased the Madness at Darkmoon Faire expansion will be able to play now.

If you don’t want to buy in advance, you still have the opportunity to join early access. Like Battlegrounds, Blizzards will offer Duels early access through a Twitch drop. From October 28 to November 11, 500 random Twitch viewers watching any Hearthstone stream will receive Early Access every hour (10,000 people in total). Remember to link your Twitch account to your Battle.net account!

Early Access has a lot of limitations. There is only one Hero Power and Treasure for each Hero, reducing the variety of this mode greatly. But the game is still very entertaining and a good way to get used to it first.

From November 12, all players will be able to participate in early access, but still face the aforementioned restrictions. Duels will officially launch (as Beta) on November 17, along with a new expansion – with additional Hero Powers and Treasures to choose from.
