Recently, we have just learned more information about the Fall Reveal event about the next expansion. In addition, this news also brings some nerfs to the current patch and they will be applied next week The affected cards are in the ‘super heavy’ RNG group.
Here are the changes:
Evocation
Old: [1 mana] => New [2 mana]
Astromancer Solarian
Old: Solarian Prime [7 mana] => New: Solarian Prime [9 mana]
Why are Evocation and Solarian Prime nerfed?
The fact that these two cards were targeted is not surprising news. Evocation is one of the greatest cards in Hearthstone history. It grants your hand random spells that disappear at the end of the turn unless cast that turn. When combined with the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Evocation allows players to use spells freely, reducing the cost of Mana Giant, as well as providing the necessary tools to handle the current stage. The important point here is that Evocation’s mana is increased from 1 to 2, making the card untraceable by Wandmaker and Cobalt Spellkin.
Changes with Solarian Prime are also long-awaited. This card gains 2 mana more than before. The problem lies in the ‘high roll’ potential of the leaf. Solarian Prime casts 5 random Mage spells, but the key point is that it will target enemies if it can. Although not promoting well if the opponent’s table is empty, Solarian Prime is still extremely strong.
Specifically, Solarian Prime can cast spells worth more than 20 mana, including delicious spells like Flamestrike, Deep Freeze, Power of Creation and even Puzzle Box of Yogg Saron (casting 10 more random spells).
After the announcement, game designer Alec Dawson took to Twitter to explain what these nerfs mean. The information is worth reading, especially as he suggests that less powerful classes (Shaman?) are being considered for future changes.
While looking at the current environment and future metas, Evocation helped enable a lot of early game swings that could feel insurmountable. We want to smooth that out. At 2 mana, it’s not as fluid with Sorcerer’s Apprentice and won’t be generated from Wandmaker/Spellkin.

On our side, we are continuing to discuss opportunities to bring up some of the weaker classes and/or touch up other play patterns in the near future. Thank again for your feedback, we read all of it (no matter how long that twitlonger is).

Hopefully these nerfs will get the meta back to normal. As usual, when these cards are nerfed, you will have the first two weeks to dust it and get the full dust back.
