Google closes Stadia game studio, stops developing games on its own

Google Stadia is shutting down its in-house game studios. Instead, Google Stadia will focus on bringing third-party games to the streaming platform and serving games without consoles or PCs.

According to a source from Kotaku, Google Stadia is canceling “many projects” including the game’s release schedule for next year. Stadia’s two game development studios will close: one in Montreal (Canada) and one in Los Angeles (USA). However, Google said it will find new positions for the development team within the company when the studio closes.

One of the heads of this studio is the creator of the Assassin’s Creed series, Jade Raymond. He signed with Google to head Stadia’s Games and Entertainment division. According to Kotaku news, Raymong will leave Google during this restructuring process. Instead of developing its own proprietary games, Stadia will focus on developing their technology for other publishers while still serving the Stadia Pro monthly paid service.

In the official announcement, Google Stadia said that the high cost of developing AAA games was the reason why it decided to stop investing in its in-house development team.

“What does this mean if you are a current or future Stadia player? You can continue to play any game on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we will continue to bring new games from third parties to the platform,” the announcement read. “We continue to focus on cloud gaming for the future and will continue to drive the industry forward.”

Unfortunately, what Stadia’s Game and Entertainment segment has developed over the past two years is still a mystery.
