A new report from Limelight Networks shows that gamers between the ages of 18 and 25 spend more time watching other people play video games than watching sports.
Those gamers spend an average of three hours and 25 minutes per week watching players play games on streaming services like Twitch, the report said. It’s “nearly an hour more” than the amount of time they watch traditional sports, according to Limelight Netowrk. Watch video games including private streams and Esports tournaments.
Korean and Japanese gamers are the most interested in watching video games online, with nearly 80% of respondents watching weekly. With nearly half of that (48%) watching other people play games for at least an hour a week.
Watching others play the game is also a way to update your strategies and understand how pro players compete. Limelight Networks says a lot of gamers think Esports is an industry they can rely on. A third of gamers and half of 18-25 year old men said they are ready to quit their jobs to become professional gamers.
The figure is highest in the UK, where “42% of gamers want to go pro,” the study found. All of this is due to the rising popularity of Esports, Limelight Network said, along with players, similar to what happens in traditional sports.
Information about this report is collected from users in France, Germany, Japan, Korea, UK, and USA. A total of 3,000 responses were collected between January 12 and 14, 2018.
