The International Olympic Council had a discussion about esports at the Olympic Summit in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The International Olympic Council (IOC) continues to discuss the feasibility of incorporating esport into Olympic sports in the future.
During a meeting in early October in Lausanne, Switzerland, the council decided that esports is sport. The strong growth of esports around the world will increase interest and help with participation in the Olympics. The panel also concluded that professional esports players train to compete with the same intensity as traditional athletes.
But in order to be recognized by the IOC, esport content “must not violate Olympic values.”. This statement is similar to what IOC president Thomas Bach said earlier.
“We want to propagate peace, no racism, no violence to everyone,” Bach said in early August. “This doesn’t go with video games, as they revolve around violence, bombs, and killing. We have to have clear and certain limits.”
Similarly, if it is to be considered for the Olympics, esports must have a governing body that ensures compliance with Olympic movement rules, such as no-doping, betting, and match-fixing.
The Commission will continue to discuss esports “for an appropriate period of time,” according to Olympics website announced.
