CRYSTAL MAIDEN
Crystal Maiden is a support icon in Dota 2, but the hero is not very popular right now. There’s no good reason to pick either: Crystal Maiden is fragile and its influence isn’t apparent in lane or throughout the game.
The global skill Arcane Aura isn’t as strong as it used to be, but with CM it’s still as good as it used to be. That leads to more indie play, but also more success in the high tier pub and pro arena.
The amount of damage and slows the hero provides cannot be underestimated. Crystal Nova may not be the most powerful nuke in the game, but its low cooldown and usefulness are undeniable. Slowing by 50% and reducing attack speed by 50 for 4.5 seconds with a decent cast range can have a big impact on the outcome of a fight.
To do that when needed, before the opponent reaches BKB, Crystal Maiden often prioritizes Crystal Nova first. Not only does it increase his laning potential when the carry starts going into the jungle, but it also makes CM stronger in teamfight: which is extremely important in the new patch. Crystal Maiden in high ranked games often chooses to build 4-1-2-1 when reaching level 8.
In the later stages of the game, heroes also become much more buff: level 15 talent gives all allies +8% magic resistance. This talent is extremely effective because it triples the CM itself, increasing the Crystal Maiden’s magic resistance to about 40%. The extra magic resistance and armor bonus from her ultimate make her a hard-to-kill target.
OGRE MAGISTER
While Crystal Maiden’s pick rate is virtually unchanged in both pub and pro, Ogre Magi really needs more adaptation in pubs. Bloodlust is a great skill and it helps in both teamfight and peaceful farming, but the current Ignite has to be said too strong.
Patch 7.23 changes Ignite so that it doesn’t refresh the duration when multicast, but extends the Ignite duration further. That means if lucky Ignite late game can deal close to 1000 damage. Even mid-game, the slow, damage, and psychopath make it worth maxing out first. Especially if you choose the Ignite talent at level 10.

WARLOCK

Golem is also strong, but it is Fatal Bonds that makes this hero an effective support in Dota 2 when the opponent games choose the wrong position. This happens often in pubs, except for lobby stacks of 5 people with rank 5k or higher. Fatal Bonds should be maxed, Shadow Word should be no more than two, while Upheaval is the next max lift.
If you look at the actual numbers from Shadow Word, it’s clear why it shouldn’t be prioritized above two points: this move adds 120 damage/heal per level. Although 180 to 300 is a significant increase, from 300 to 420 does not give that feeling anymore.
