Dota 2: Newbee and all players are permanently banned by Valve for selling matches

Newbee for sale

One of the most prestigious Dota 2 organizations, Newbee has been banned from competing for life.

Newbee and their 2020 roster have been banned from any Valve-sponsored tournaments. This ended Newbee’s existence in Dota 2 and its players as of May 2020. Newbee’s roster at that time consisted of the following players:

  1. Xu “Moogy” Han
  2. Yin “Aq” Rui
  3. Wen “Wizard” Lipeng
  4. Yan “Waixi” Chao
  5. Zeng “Faith” Hongda

Newbee was once one of the most successful Dota 2 teams. The organization is best known for winning The International 2014 and having a superstar roster, including its current player Faith. They almost became the first organization to win two times The International, when they reached the final of The International 2017.

Why was Newbee banned in Dota 2?

Newbee’s ban comes months after allegations of match-fixing in the organization’s Dota 2. The team was accused of fixing the match against the Avengers during the StarLadder ImbaTV Minor Season 3 qualifiers. Former Newbee captain Zhangg “xiao8” Ning publicly believed that the two competing teams had a settlement behavior and was agreed by many parties.

The ban did not take place immediately, but had to wait many months later. Newbee and 5 players were banned by CDA, the Chinese esports association for match-fixing. This revealed many doubts before Newbee, specifically a Chinese bookie said that Faith had intentionally got first blood in 18 consecutive games.

This also exposes many serious problems inside the esports organization, both in terms of financial situation and how contracts are managed. After the ban, Newbee was accused by Fortnite players of contract exploitation and bounties. The organization allegedly pocketed all of their Fortnite players’ earnings at the Fortnite World Cup.

The ban order has not been issued until now, possibly because of the upcoming Dota Pro Circuit tournaments. Although many Chinese tournament organizers banned Newbee, Perfect World has not yet. Perfect World is the operator of the Dota Pro Circuit tournaments and may have been waiting for a verdict from Valve. Valve then made it clear that Newbee would not be competing in any of their official Dota 2 tournaments.
