DDR4 is also going to be a thing of the past, guys…

Chinese NAND flash memory maker Shenzhen Longsys Electronics recently showcased the power of its DDR5-6400 RAM, showing it has promising potential. Currently, Longsys is developing two DDR5-6400 RAM modules, of which the 16 GB version is designed in a single-rank style, and the 32 GB version is designed in a dual-rank style.

Both modules have an 8-layer PCB board, CAS latency (CL) of 40, and a voltage of 1.1 V. However, it is known that DDR5 RAM will be clocked at up to 8400 MHz and capacity up to 128 GB per module.

Longsys’ test system is equipped with an 8-core Alder Lake-S chip and a base clock of 800 MHz. However, it is not clear if Longsys used DDR5-6400 or DDR5-4800 RAM modules to compare with DDR4 RAM, and the clock speed of DDR4 RAM is also a mystery.

According to Longsys benchmark results, the DDR5 module has significantly higher read, write, and copy performance than the DDR4 module in the AIDA64 test, with a difference of 39%, 36%, and 12% respectively.

However, the DDR5 module has 97% higher latency. As for Master Lu – a popular benchmarking software in China – DDR5 RAM achieved a score of 193,684, and DDR4 RAM was 91,575, which is a performance difference of up to 112%.

The 12th generation Intel CPU “Alder Lake-S” is about to be released in late 2021 or early 2022, so we are about to see the true power of DDR5 RAM.
